Benjamin Banneker: The Star-Gazing Genius

Imagine a boy who loved learning so much he taught himself everything! That was Benjamin Banneker. He was born a long, long time ago, in 1731, in Maryland.

His parents were free African Americans. Benjamin didn't go to school much, but he was super curious about the world. He loved looking at the stars, figuring out math problems, and understanding how nature worked.

He became known as a brilliant mathematician and astronomer, which means he was an expert at numbers and stars!

Benjamin Banneker had a very important job helping to draw the lines for a brand new city: Washington, D.C.! He worked with a surveyor named Andrew Ellicott. Together, they measured and marked the land to create the borders of the capital city.

It was like drawing the outline of a giant playground for the whole country. His careful work helped make sure the city was built in the right place. This was a huge job for someone who taught himself so much!
