Battle of Wagram
Key Facts
Why Were They Fighting?
Long ago, Emperor Napoleon of France was super powerful. But the Austrian Empire wanted to be powerful too and decided to fight France. They marched into a place called Bavaria, which was friends with France. Napoleon had to rush back to stop them. He won some battles and even took their capital city, Vienna! But the Austrian army didn't give up and ran away north, ready to fight again.
The Big Showdown!
Napoleon gathered a HUGE army, bigger than 150,000 soldiers! He secretly crossed a big river called the Danube at night. The Austrian army was waiting, spread out like a giant smile. Napoleon tried to break through their lines, but the Austrians held strong. The next day, the Austrians tried to surround Napoleon's army, but he used his amazing soldiers and cannons to push them back.
A Super Loud Battle!
This battle was HUGE, with about 300,000 soldiers all in one place! They used lots and lots of cannons, making a really loud noise. The soldiers even lay down in ditches to hide from the flying cannonballs. It was like a giant game of chess, but with real soldiers and cannons! In the end, Napoleon's army won, but it was a very close fight.
What Happened Next?
Even though Napoleon won, the Austrian army was still strong enough to march away. But Napoleon's army chased them, and they fought again. The Austrians decided to stop fighting and asked for a break, which ended the big war. Napoleon was happy, and one of his best helpers, Louis-Alexandre Berthier, became a Prince because of this battle!
