Why Were They Fighting?

A long time ago, France was going through a big change called the French Revolution. Some countries, like Prussia, didn't like these changes and wanted to stop them. The Prussian army marched towards Paris, the capital of France, hoping to make the King powerful again.

But the French army, though new and not as experienced, stood in their way near a small village called Valmy. It was like a schoolyard game where one team tries to stop another from reaching the playground!

The Big Day!

On September 20, 1792, the two armies faced each other. The Prussian army was very famous and thought they would win easily. They started shooting cannons, and the French soldiers heard the loud booms.

But instead of running away, the French soldiers stood tall and strong, like brave knights! They didn't even have to fight up close. The Prussians saw that the French were determined and decided not to keep fighting.

It was a surprising turn of events!

A Super Important Win!

Even though not many people were hurt, this battle was a HUGE win for France! It showed everyone that the new French army and the ideas of the Revolution were strong. It was like winning a big game that everyone thought you would lose.

This victory made the French people feel very proud and brave. They decided to get rid of the King and make France a republic, where the people have more say. This battle helped the whole Revolution keep going!

Who Were the Heroes?

Two main generals led the French army at Valmy. Their names were François Kellermann and Charles Dumouriez. They were like the captains of the French team, encouraging their soldiers to stand firm.

The Prussian army was led by the Duke of Brunswick. He was a powerful leader, but even he couldn't make his army march through the determined French. The bravery of Kellermann and Dumouriez helped save Paris and boost the spirits of the French people.
