Why Were They Fighting?

Long, long ago, during a big war called World War I, countries like Britain and France wanted to win against Germany. They planned a huge attack to make the war end faster. This big plan was called the Battle of the Somme. It was supposed to be a quick win, but it turned into a very long and difficult fight.

The Big Day!

On the very first day, July 1st, 1916, it was a super busy and sad day. The British army had the most people hurt or lost on that single day. It was like if everyone in your whole school got hurt all at once! This happened because the German soldiers were very well-prepared for the attack.

New Toys and Big Changes

During this battle, they tried out some new inventions! They used big metal machines called tanks for the first time, which were like noisy, bumpy tractors. They also saw more airplanes than ever before, watching the fight from the sky. These new things were exciting but didn't always work perfectly.

Did They Win?

The battle lasted for many, many months, from summer to late autumn. Even though the British and French armies moved forward a little bit, they didn't capture the important towns they wanted. It was a very long and costly battle, and it didn't end the war quickly like they hoped.
