Why Were They Fighting Over a City?

A long time ago, during a huge war called World War II, two big teams were fighting. One team was Germany, and the other was the Soviet Union. They wanted to control a city called Stalingrad.

This city was super important because it was a big place for making things and a busy spot on a giant river. Whoever controlled Stalingrad could also get to oil fields far away and boss around the river traffic. It was like fighting over the best toy in the playground!

The City Becomes a Giant Battlefield!

Germany's army, called the 6th Army, marched into Stalingrad. But the Soviet soldiers didn't give up easily! They fought back in every single street and building.

The fighting was so fierce that it was like a giant, noisy game of tag, but with real danger. Bombs fell from the sky, making buildings crumble into piles of bricks. Soldiers had to hide and fight from room to room, and sometimes even from floor to floor in the same building.

It was a very, very scary time.

Winter Makes Things Even Tougher!

As the fighting went on, the weather turned super cold. It was like the coldest winter you can imagine, with snow and ice everywhere. The soldiers on both sides were freezing, and it was hard to find food or warm places.

Even though it was freezing, the fighting didn't stop! They kept battling in the snow and ice, trying to win the city. The Soviet army was very clever and managed to surround the German army, trapping them.

Who Won the Big City Fight?

After many, many months of fighting, the German army ran out of food and supplies. They were trapped and very tired. The Soviet army had won the Battle of Stalingrad!

This was a huge moment in the war because it showed that Germany could be beaten. It was like a superhero winning a super tough fight, and it gave everyone else hope. The city was mostly destroyed, but the people who fought there were very brave.
