The French ships were tied together like a giant floating castle!

Why Were They Fighting?

Long, long ago, England and France were like grumpy neighbors who didn't get along. They started a big fight called the Hundred Years' War. This battle was one of the very first big splashes in that war. The English king, Edward III, wanted to sail his ships to France, but the French ships were waiting to stop him. It was like a giant game of naval tag!

Ships Like Floating Forts!

The French ships were super clever! They tied their ships together in three long lines, making them like giant floating forts. This made them hard to attack. The English had fewer ships, but they were smart. They waited for the wind and waves to help them. The French ships got all tangled up, which was not good for them!

A Big Splashy Victory!

When the French ships were all mixed up, the English ships zoomed in! They were able to get around the French ships and win the battle. The French lost a LOT of their ships and many, many men. It was a huge win for England and made their navy the boss of the English Channel for a while.

Who Were the Big Bosses?

The English side had King Edward III, who was a brave leader. On the French side, there were two main commanders: Hugues Quiéret and Nicolas Béhuchet. They were in charge of the big French fleet. Even though the French lost this battle, the war kept going for a very long time!
