Key Facts
Surprise! A Bridge Still Stands!
In 1945, during a huge war called World War II, American soldiers were marching into Germany. They thought all the bridges over the big Rhine River were blown up! But then, WOW!
They found one still standing – the Ludendorff Bridge! It was like finding a hidden treasure. The soldiers were so surprised they rushed across it.
This was a super important moment because it helped them get into Germany faster than anyone expected.
Trying to Blow It Up!
The German army didn't want the Americans to have the bridge. They had planted lots of bombs, like 2,800 kilograms, which is as much as a small elephant weighs! But when they tried to blow it up, only a little bit of the bombs went off.
The bridge was still there! The Americans then worked really hard to make sure the Germans couldn't destroy it. They even had to fight off planes trying to bomb it!
Super Weapons and Brave Soldiers
Both sides used amazing and sometimes scary new weapons. The Germans tried using rockets, like the V-2 rockets that zoomed through the sky, and even giant underwater bombs. The Americans used tons of anti-aircraft guns, which are like super-powered cannons that shoot at planes.
They had the biggest group of these guns ever seen in the war! They were all trying to protect the bridge and stop the other side.
A Shortcut to Victory!
Because the Americans got across the Rhine River so quickly, it helped them win the war much sooner. It was like finding a shortcut on a long road trip! They were able to send lots of soldiers and tanks into Germany. Even though the bridge eventually fell down, the soldiers had already built other bridges. This surprise capture helped end the war about three weeks earlier!
