Key Facts
Why Were They Fighting?
Long, long ago, two big leaders, Tsar Peter I of Russia and King Charles XII of Sweden, were in a huge fight called the Great Northern War. It was like a super long game of tag where countries were trying to be the boss of the area around the Baltic Sea. For years, King Charles and his Swedish army were winning a lot!
They beat almost everyone else. But Tsar Peter and his Russian army were still in the game, and they were getting ready for a big showdown.
A Cold Winter and a Big March
King Charles decided to march his army all the way to Moscow, the capital of Russia. But the journey was super tough! The winter of 1708-1709 was the coldest anyone could remember, like a super-duper freeze that made everything difficult.
The Russians also used a clever trick called 'scorched earth,' where they burned everything the Swedish army might need. This made King Charles change his plan and march south instead.
The Big Clash at Poltava!
After the freezing winter, the tired Swedish army went to a town called Poltava. They decided to surround it. But Tsar Peter was coming with a HUGE army, much bigger than the Swedes! It was like a school bus full of soldiers for every one or two Swedish soldiers. The two armies met, and after a big, noisy battle, the Swedes were defeated. Many had to surrender, and King Charles had to run away!
Who Became the New Boss?
This battle was a super important turning point! Before Poltava, Sweden was like the most popular kid in school, in charge of a big area. But after this battle, Russia, led by Tsar Peter, became the new boss. It was a huge win for Russia and a big loss for Sweden. It showed everyone that Russia was a powerful country that everyone needed to pay attention to.
