And the tombs get older as we approach the part of the compound which is much older than the church - an old graveyard. This grave is from 1757, when the US was still a colony, and the year the English defeated the French in the battle of Plassey.

Who Was Fighting and Why?

Long ago, in a land called Bengal, two big groups wanted control. One was the British East India Company, like a super-powerful trading company. The other was the Nawab, the ruler of Bengal. The Nawab didn't want the British to build big forts. The British wanted more power and riches. This disagreement was like a big argument that was about to turn into a fight!

The Sneaky Plan!

The Nawab had a huge army, way bigger than the British! But the British leader, Robert Clive, made a secret deal. He promised to make the Nawab's own army chief, Mir Jafar, the new ruler if he helped them. So, when the battle started, Mir Jafar and many of his soldiers just stood there, not fighting! It was like half the playground deciding not to play the game!

A Super Quick Battle!

The battle happened on a hot day, June 23, 1757. It took place near a river in a place called Palashi. Even though the Nawab had about 50,000 soldiers and lots of elephants, and the British only had about 3,000 soldiers, the British won! This is because many of the Nawab's soldiers didn't fight, and the Nawab himself ran away. The whole thing was over in about 11 hours!

What Happened Next?

Because the British won, they got lots of power and money in Bengal. This helped them become even stronger in India. They started to control more and more land. It was like winning a game that let them become the champions of a whole new playground, and they stayed champions for a very, very long time!
