Why Were They Fighting?

Long ago, during a big fight called the American Civil War, two sides, the Union (blue) and the Confederacy (gray), wanted to control different parts of America. The Union soldiers were marching south from Missouri, and the Confederate soldiers wanted to push them back. They met near a place called Pea Ridge in Arkansas. It was like a big game of tug-of-war for the land!

The Big Showdown!

On March 7th and 8th, 1862, the battle began! The Confederate army, led by General Van Dorn, tried to surprise the Union army, led by General Curtis. It was a tough fight, with soldiers battling on the hills of Pea Ridge. The fighting was so fierce, it was like a really loud thunderstorm that lasted for two whole days!

Who Won the Day?

Even though the Confederates had a lot of soldiers and cannons, General Curtis's Union army was super strong and smart. They held their ground on the first day and then pushed the Confederate army back on the second day. It was a big win for the Union! They got to keep control of Missouri and northern Arkansas.

What Happened Next?

Because the Union army won at Pea Ridge, they made sure that Missouri and a big part of Arkansas stayed with the Union. This battle was like a giant puzzle piece that helped decide who would control that part of the country. It showed that even when things look tough, teamwork and bravery can make a big difference!
