Where Did the Tanks Rumble?

Once upon a time, during a big war called World War II, two mighty armies, Germany and the Soviet Union, faced off near a place called Kursk. It was the summer of 1943, and the air was hot. The Germans wanted to surprise the Soviets with a huge attack, like a surprise party, but with tanks!

They planned to surround the Soviet soldiers in a big bulge of land called a 'salient'. But the Soviets knew about the plan and got ready for a super big fight.

The Biggest Tank Fight EVER!

This battle was HUGE! It was the biggest tank battle in the history of fighting. Think of thousands and thousands of tanks, more than all the cars in your town, all trying to fight at once!

It was like a giant, noisy playground brawl, but with metal monsters. The fighting was so intense that the first day, July 5th, was the worst day ever for airplanes getting shot down. So many planes fell from the sky!

Who Was Fighting?

On one side were the German soldiers, trying to push forward with their tanks. On the other side were the Soviet soldiers, defending their homes. The Soviet leader, Joseph Stalin, wanted his soldiers to be super strong.

The German leader, Adolf Hitler, thought winning this battle would make his country look strong again. But the Soviets had spies who told them the plan, so they built super strong defenses, like building a giant fort with many layers.

The Super Important Win!

In the end, the Soviet Union won this giant battle! It was a really important win because it was the last time the Germans were able to start a big attack on the Eastern Front. After Kursk, the Soviets started to push the Germans back, and they kept winning for the rest of the war. It showed everyone that the Soviet army was incredibly strong and determined to protect their country.
