Battle of Jisr Benat Yakub
Key Facts
The Big Chase After a Giant Battle!
After a super big battle called the Battle of Megiddo, an army called the Yildirim Army Group was running away! They were trying to get to a city called Damascus. But another army, the Desert Mounted Corps, was right behind them, like a speedy cheetah chasing a gazelle.
They wanted to stop the Yildirim Army Group from getting away too easily. This chase happened a long, long time ago, during World War I.
A Bridge to Nowhere for Some!
The Yildirim Army Group had to cross a very important bridge over the Jordan River. This bridge was called Jisr Benat Yakub, which means 'Daughters of Jacob Bridge'. Some soldiers from the Yildirim Army Group stayed behind to protect the bridge and cover the escape of their friends.
But the soldiers from Australia, who were part of the Desert Mounted Corps, were super fast and attacked them! They captured some of the soldiers who couldn't get away in time.
Why This Bridge Was So Important!
Bridges are like super-highways for armies! This bridge was the only easy way for the Yildirim Army Group to cross the big Jordan River and keep running towards Damascus. If the Desert Mounted Corps could take control of the bridge, they could stop the whole army from escaping.
It was like trying to stop a big parade by blocking the main street. Controlling the bridge was a really big deal for winning the war!
Who Was Leading the Charge?
The brave soldiers who were doing most of the chasing and fighting at the bridge were from Australia. They were called the Australian Mounted Division. They were like the speedy frontrunners of the whole chase!
They were followed by another group called the 5th Cavalry Division. These soldiers were all working together to make sure the Yildirim Army Group couldn't get away easily after their big defeat.
