When the World Was Fighting!

A long time ago, in December 1941, a big war called World War II was happening all over the world. On one special morning, while people in America were surprised by an attack on Pearl Harbor, soldiers from Japan also started a big fight in a place called Hong Kong. This was a very important battle because it was one of the first big fights in a part of the world called the Pacific.

Who Was Fighting?

In Hong Kong, there were brave soldiers from different countries trying to protect their home. There were soldiers from Britain, India, and Canada! There were also helpers called the Auxiliary Defence Units and the Hong Kong Volunteer Defence Corps. They all worked together to try and keep Hong Kong safe from the attacking Japanese soldiers.

The Fight for Hong Kong Island

The soldiers had to defend three main parts of Hong Kong. First, they had to protect the land on the mainland, called Kowloon and the New Territories. But the Japanese soldiers were very strong, and within a week, the defenders had to leave those areas. Then, they had to protect Hong Kong Island, but it became too hard to defend, and sadly, Hong Kong had to surrender.

A Sad Christmas and a Long Wait

When Hong Kong surrendered, it was just before Christmas, and people called it a 'Black Christmas' because it was such a sad time. The Japanese soldiers took over and stayed for a long, long time, until the summer of 1945. This battle showed that even powerful countries could be defeated, and it made people rethink who was the strongest in Asia.
