Battle of Hastings
Key Facts
Who Wanted the Crown?
Long, long ago, in 1066, England didn't have a king everyone agreed on. Two brave men, Harold Godwinson and William the Conqueror, both thought they should be king. Harold was already king, but William, who came from a place called Normandy in France, believed he had a promise from the old king. So, William gathered a big army and sailed across the sea to England to fight for the crown!
The Big Day on the Hill!
The battle happened on a sunny day, October 14, 1066, near a town called Hastings. Harold's soldiers stood on top of a hill, which was a great spot to defend themselves. They used shields to make a wall, like a giant, strong fence!
William's soldiers were on horses and had swords and arrows. They tried to climb the hill, but Harold's men pushed them back down. It was a tough fight for everyone involved.
How Did William Win?
William's army was very clever. They pretended to run away, and some of Harold's soldiers got too excited and chased them down the hill. This broke their shield wall, and William's soldiers could then attack them more easily. The fighting lasted all day, and it was very tiring. Sadly, King Harold was killed during the battle, which meant William could finally become the new King of England.
A New King for England!
When William won the Battle of Hastings, he became known as William the Conqueror. This battle was super important because it meant that the rulers of England changed completely. The language people spoke started to change too, with lots of French words coming into English. It was like a big reset button for England, and it helped shape the country into what it is today!
