Why Were They Mad at the Fort?

Long ago, the United States was like a big family, but some states wanted to leave and start their own country. South Carolina was one of them! They told the soldiers in Fort Sumter, a big stone fort in the harbor, to leave.

But the soldiers, led by Major Anderson, said no. They stayed in the fort, which was like a strong castle on an island. The people in South Carolina got even more upset because they wanted the fort to be theirs.

Boom! The Cannons Start Firing!

On a cloudy morning, the cannons from the land started to boom! They fired at Fort Sumter. It was like a giant fireworks show, but much scarier! The soldiers inside the fort tried to fire back, but the cannons on land were too many. For a whole day and night, the fort was bombarded. It was a very noisy and scary time for the soldiers inside. They were trapped on their island fort.

Surrendering the Big Stone Castle

After 34 hours of loud booms and smoke, Major Anderson knew they couldn't win. They were running out of food and the fort was taking a beating. So, he decided to surrender. It was like raising a white flag to say 'we give up.' No one was seriously hurt during the fighting, which was lucky! But this surrender was a HUGE deal. It was the spark that lit the fire for a big war called the Civil War.

The War Begins!

When the news spread that Fort Sumter had been attacked and surrendered, people all over the country were shocked. The President, Abraham Lincoln, asked for lots of volunteers to help stop the fighting. This made even more states decide to leave the United States and join the other side.

The battle at Fort Sumter was the very first big event of the American Civil War, a war that would change the country forever.
