Battle of Fort Henry
Key Facts
Why Were They Fighting?
Long, long ago, during a big disagreement called the American Civil War, there was a fort called Fort Henry. It sat right on a river in Tennessee. The Union army wanted to control the rivers because they were like superhighways for moving soldiers and supplies.
The Confederate army wanted to keep the Union army away. So, the Union army, led by a brave general named Ulysses S. Grant, decided to go get Fort Henry!
Rainy Day Surprise Attack!
General Grant had a plan! He sent his soldiers to land near the fort. At the same time, big boats with cannons, called gunboats, were supposed to blast the fort.
But guess what? It rained and rained! The river rose up so high it almost flooded the fort.
The fort's leader, General Lloyd Tilghman, saw the big gunboats and the rising water. He knew it was a losing battle and decided to surrender before General Grant's soldiers even got there!
A Big Win for the Union!
Surrendering Fort Henry was a super important moment! It was the first big win for General Grant and the Union army in this part of the country. Because they won, the Union army could now use the Tennessee River to send their boats and supplies way up the river. This helped them a lot in the rest of the war. It was like opening a brand new road for them!
Who Were the Big Stars?
The two main leaders in this story were General Ulysses S. Grant for the Union and General Lloyd Tilghman for the Confederates. Grant was a very smart general who would go on to lead the whole Union army. Tilghman was the brave commander of Fort Henry. Even though he had to surrender, he made a smart decision to save his soldiers from a flood and a fight they couldn't win.
