Key Facts
Why Were They Fighting Anyway?
Long, long ago, England and France were like grumpy neighbors who kept arguing. This big argument was called the Hundred Years' War. King Edward III of England decided to sail his army to France to show them who was boss!
They marched through France, sometimes burning things, like a really messy road trip. The French King, Philip VI, wasn't happy and sent his army to chase them. It was like a giant game of tag, but with real swords and arrows!
The Super-Powered Archers!
The English army found a nice hill to stand on near a town called Crécy. They had a secret weapon: super-fast longbows! These weren't like the little bows you might see at a fair.
The arrows from these bows could fly really far and fast, like a super-speedy dart. The French had archers too, but they used crossbows, which were slower. When the English archers started shooting, their arrows rained down like a hailstorm, making the French crossbowmen run away!
Knights vs. Arrows!
After the archers scared off the French crossbowmen, the French knights on horses tried to charge the English. But it was tricky! The ground was muddy, they had to run uphill, and the English had even dug little holes to trip the horses!
Plus, those speedy arrows kept whizzing past. The knights were tired and confused by the time they reached the English soldiers. It was a tough fight, but the English were ready!
Who Won and Why It Matters!
Guess what? The English won the Battle of Crécy! It was a huge surprise because the French army was much bigger. This battle showed everyone how amazing the longbow was. It was so powerful that it could beat even the bravest knights on horseback. After the battle, the English even took over a French town called Calais, and they kept it for over 200 years! This battle changed how wars were fought.
