Key Facts
Why Were They Fighting Over a Hill?
Long ago, during a huge war called World War I, soldiers from the British Empire and the Ottoman Empire were fighting over a place called Gallipoli. There was a special hill, like a tall mountain in a park, called Chunuk Bair. Whoever controlled this hill could see everything around it! The British soldiers wanted to capture it to help win the war, but the Ottoman soldiers wanted to keep it safe.
The Big Climb!
In August 1915, brave soldiers from New Zealand and other parts of the British Empire tried to climb Chunuk Bair. They climbed in the dark and the early morning. Some soldiers reached the very top! But the Ottoman soldiers were waiting and fought back. It was a very tough and dangerous climb, like trying to reach the top of a giant slide while people are trying to stop you.
Who Was There?
Lots of different soldiers were part of this battle. From the British side, there were soldiers from New Zealand, like the Wellington Battalion and the Otago Battalion. There were also soldiers from England, like the Gloucestershire Regiment and the Welch Regiment.
The Ottoman side had their own brave soldiers, and a very important leader named Mustafa Kemal helped them fight back. It was a team effort on both sides!
Did They Keep the Hill?
For a little while, it looked like the British soldiers had won the hill! They were so happy to be on top. But the Ottoman soldiers fought back very strongly. They were able to take the hill back. Even though they captured it for a short time, it was too hard to keep. This battle was a small part of a bigger fight called the Gallipoli Campaign.
