Why Were They Fighting?

Long ago, during a big war called the Civil War, two big armies wanted to control a town called Chattanooga. One army, the Union army, wanted to push the other army, the Confederate army, out of the area. The Union general, Rosecrans, was trying to get his soldiers into Georgia.

The Confederate general, Bragg, wanted to stop him and get Chattanooga back. This fight happened near a creek called Chickamauga, which means 'River of Death' in a Native American language. It was a very dangerous place to fight!

The Big Rumble in the Woods!

The battle started on September 19, 1863, and lasted for three days! It was like a huge game of tag, but with real soldiers and cannons. The soldiers fought in thick forests, which made it hard to see who was where.

Sometimes, the armies would bump into each other by accident! One part of the Union army got separated, and the Confederate army saw its chance to attack. It was a very confusing and scary time for everyone involved.

A Tricky Mistake and a Brave Stand!

On the second day, a mistake happened! A Union general thought there was a hole in his army's line and moved soldiers to fix it. But this actually made a real hole!

The Confederate army, led by a general named Longstreet, rushed through the gap. Many Union soldiers had to run away, including their main general. But some brave soldiers, led by General George H.

Thomas, stayed and fought on a hill called Horseshoe Ridge. They held their ground until dark, saving the rest of the army!

What Happened Next?

Even though the Union army lost this big battle, the soldiers who stayed and fought on Horseshoe Ridge were called 'Rock of Chickamauga' because they were so strong. The Union army had to go back to Chattanooga and were trapped there for a while. The Confederates won the battle, but it was a very costly win.

This battle was one of the biggest and bloodiest fights of the whole Civil War, and it showed how important controlling Chattanooga was.
