Why Were They Fighting?

Long, long ago, England and France were like grumpy neighbors who kept arguing over who owned what. For about 300 years, English kings had owned a big, sunny area in France called Gascony. But the French king wanted it back! This fight over land had been going on for a super long time, and the Battle of Castillon was a big moment in this big argument.

The Big Day!

On July 17, 1453, a brave but maybe a little too excited English leader named John Talbot thought the French were running away. He rushed his soldiers forward to attack a French camp that was actually super strong and ready! It was like running into a playground fort without checking if your friends were already inside with all their toys.

Boom! The Cannons Roar!

The French had a secret weapon: lots of big, loud cannons! As more English soldiers arrived to help Talbot, the French cannons blasted them one by one. It was one of the first times in a big European battle that cannons were used so much to win. Imagine a whole line of super-soakers blasting at a small group of kids trying to get to the swings!

Who Won and What Happened Next?

The French won this battle! Because of this big win, England lost almost all the land they owned in France, especially Gascony. It was a huge change! This battle helped end a very long war between England and France, and it showed everyone how powerful cannons could be in fighting.
