Why Were They Fighting?

Long ago, in a land far away, there were powerful leaders and brave soldiers. Sometimes, leaders didn't agree, and this led to big arguments. In this story, some important Indian rulers and the British East India Company, which was like a big business with its own soldiers, had a disagreement.

They were fighting over who got to be in charge and collect money from the land. This disagreement grew bigger and bigger until it turned into a giant battle!

The Big Showdown!

The battle happened a long, long time ago, on October 22nd and 23rd, 1764. It took place in a town called Buxar, which was like a strong fort by a very big river called the Ganges. The British soldiers, led by a brave man named Major Hector Munro, faced a super-team of Indian rulers.

It was like a playground game where one team had to be super clever to win against many players. The British soldiers were very good at fighting and managed to win this tough game!

What Did They Win?

After the big fight, the winners got something very special. It was like winning the grand prize in a competition! The British East India Company got the right to collect money, called 'revenue,' from big areas of land.

This was like being allowed to collect all the allowance from three whole neighborhoods! This prize was so important that it changed how things were run in those places for a very long time.

Who Were the Big Players?

There were some very important people in this story. On one side were the Indian rulers: Balwant Singh, the Maharaja of Benaras; Mir Qasim, the Nawab of Bengal; Shuja-ud-daula, the Nawab of Awadh; and even the Emperor Shah Alam II. On the other side were the British East India Company soldiers, led by Major Hector Munro.

It was like a game with captains and their teams, and everyone wanted to be the champion!
