Why Were They Fighting?
Long ago, a big country called Spain ruled over many lands in South America. But the people living there wanted to be in charge of their own homes! They started to form armies to fight for their freedom.
One brave leader named Simon Bolivar gathered soldiers from different places, like Venezuela and New Granada. They wanted to push the Spanish soldiers out so they could make their own rules and be a free country. It was like a big team-up to win independence!
The Big Day at the Bridge!
On August 7, 1819, the armies met near a bridge in the mountains. It wasn't a huge battlefield, but it was super important! Simon Bolivar's team, which included some brave soldiers from Britain too, faced the Spanish army.
The fight was quick, lasting only about two hours! It was a very exciting and fast battle. The soldiers had to be brave and quick to win the day.
This battle happened in a place called Boyacá, which is why it has that name.
A Victory That Changed Everything!
When Simon Bolivar's army won, it was a HUGE deal! It was like scoring the winning goal in a big game. This victory meant that New Granada, a part of South America, was finally free from Spain's rule.
It was the start of many other countries in South America becoming free too. This win helped them believe they could do it! It was a turning point, like when you finally learn to ride a bike without falling.
Who Were the Big Stars?
The most famous hero was General Simon Bolivar. He was the main leader who planned the whole campaign to free the land. There were also other important generals like Francisco de Paula Santander and José Antonio Anzoátegui, who led different parts of the army.
On the other side, Colonel José Barreiro was a leader of the Spanish army. But in the end, Bolivar's team was victorious, and many Spanish leaders were even captured!
