Why Were They Fighting Over Atlanta?

Long ago, during a big argument called the Civil War, the North and South were fighting. The North wanted to capture Atlanta because it was like a giant toy box for the South! It had train tracks and supplies that helped the Southern army.

If the North could take Atlanta, they could stop the South from getting what they needed. So, the armies marched towards this important city, ready for a big showdown.

The Big Day: July 22nd!

On a hot summer day, July 22, 1864, the battle began just outside Atlanta. The Northern soldiers, led by a general named Sherman, were strong and pushed hard. The Southern soldiers tried their best to protect their city. It was a very busy and loud day with lots of action. Sadly, a brave Northern general named McPherson was lost in the fighting, which was a big loss for his side.

Did Atlanta Fall Right Away?

Even though it was called the Battle of Atlanta, the city didn't get captured that very day! The fighting was just part of a bigger plan. The Northern army kept trying to get control of the train tracks and supplies.

It took many more weeks of trying and a long wait, like waiting for your turn on the swings, before Atlanta finally became theirs on September 2nd. Then, Sherman's army marched on to other places!

Why This Battle Was a Big Deal!

Winning Atlanta made people in the North feel super happy and proud! It was like their favorite team winning the championship. This good feeling helped President Lincoln get re-elected as president. It showed everyone that the North was getting closer to winning the whole war. So, even though it was a tough fight, the Battle of Atlanta was a turning point that helped bring the war to an end.
