Why Were They Fighting?

Long ago, during a big war called the Civil War, two sides, the Union (blue) and the Confederates (gray), were trying to control important places. The Union wanted to take over a city called Vicksburg. To get there, they had to go past a fort called Fort Hindman, which was built by the Confederates. This fort was like a gatekeeper, and the Union soldiers really wanted to open it!

The Big Fight Begins!

In January 1863, Union soldiers and big Navy ships sailed up a river towards Fort Hindman. On January 9th, the soldiers started getting off the boats. The next day, the Navy ships fired their big cannons at the fort! Meanwhile, the Union soldiers got ready to attack on the land. It was a noisy and busy time!

Surprise! Who Won?

On January 11th, the Navy ships fired again, and the Union soldiers charged forward. But then, something funny happened! White flags started popping up from the fort, meaning the Confederates wanted to stop fighting. It was a bit confusing, but the Union soldiers won the battle and took control of the fort. This was a surprise victory for the Union!

What Happened Next?

Even though the Union won this battle, the main boss, General Grant, wasn't sure it was a good idea at first. But he later realized it helped them get closer to Vicksburg. Winning this battle was like clearing a small obstacle on a big race track. It helped the Union win the whole war later on!
