Where the Land Meets the Water!

Battery Park City is a super cool neighborhood right at the very bottom of Manhattan Island, where New York City is. It's like a special playground right next to the big Hudson River. It's so close to the water, you can almost feel the ocean breeze!

It's separated from other busy parts of the city by a big road called the West Side Highway. Right next door is a park called The Battery, and that's where Battery Park City got its name!

A Neighborhood Made From Digging!

Guess what? Most of Battery Park City wasn't always here! It was made in the 1970s by using dirt and rocks that were dug up from other big building projects.

Imagine using the dirt from digging a giant hole for a skyscraper to build a whole new place to live! They used over 3 million big piles of dirt and rocks, which is enough to fill a lot of school buses! They also used sand from the bottom of the harbor.

Fun Places to Play and Learn!

Even though it's a place where people live, Battery Park City has lots of amazing things to see and do. More than one-third of the whole area is made up of parks and open spaces, perfect for running around and playing! There's even a special school called Stuyvesant High School, and a museum called the Museum of Jewish Heritage where you can learn cool things.

Plus, there are shops and yummy restaurants!

Who Takes Care of It?

Battery Park City is a special place because it's on land that belongs to New York State. A group called the Battery Park City Authority (BPCA) helps take care of it. They make sure everything is running smoothly, like keeping the parks clean and making sure the buildings are safe. It’s like having a special team of grown-ups looking after this unique neighborhood by the water.
