Key Facts
Meet the Giant Brick Building!
Battersea Power Station is a super big building in London, England, right next to a famous river called the Thames. It's made of millions and millions of bricks, so many that it's one of the biggest brick buildings in the whole world! It looks like a castle with four tall chimneys that used to puff out smoke. It's so big, it's like having two power stations built side-by-side in one giant home.
How It Made Power for London
This giant building was like a huge kitchen for making electricity! Inside, they burned coal to heat up water, and the steam from the water turned big machines called turbines. These turbines spun very fast and made the electricity that lit up homes and schools all over London.
It was built in two parts, one finished before World War II and the other finished after, so it took a long time to build.
A Star in a Movie!
Guess what? Battersea Power Station is so cool, it even appeared on the cover of a famous music album! A band called Pink Floyd used a picture of the power station with a big pig flying between its chimneys for their album 'Animals'. It's also been in lots of movies and TV shows because it looks so impressive and unique. It's like a celebrity building!
From Powerhouse to Fun Place!
After it stopped making electricity, the building was empty for a long time and started to get a bit run down. But then, people decided to fix it up and make it a new, exciting place! Now, it has shops, places to eat, and even places to live. It's like giving an old, important building a brand new life so everyone can enjoy it again.
