Have you ever seen a really, really big building? The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception is like a super-sized church in Washington D.C. It's so huge that it's the biggest Catholic church building in all of North America!
It's also the tallest building in Washington D.C. that people can actually go inside and use. Think of it as a giant, beautiful house of worship that took a long time to build.
When Did This Big Building Start?
This amazing basilica didn't just pop up overnight! Construction started way back on September 23, 1920. That's over 100 years ago, even before your grandparents were born! It was built in a style that looks like old castles and churches from places like Italy and Greece, called Byzantine and Romanesque Revival. It took many years to finish all the beautiful details.
Who is This Church For?
This special church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, who is a very important person in the Catholic religion. The Pope, who is like the leader of the Catholic Church, even gave her a special title: the Immaculate Conception. The Pope himself donated a beautiful mosaic picture of her for the church.
This basilica is also like the main church for all Catholics in the United States, a place that represents them.

Then, Pope Benedict XVI gave it a special gift called a Golden Rose. And Pope Francis even came to make a very important announcement about a saint named Junípero Serra.
