Where is This Magical Place?

It was the main spot for the Muisca people, who were like the rulers of this whole area. This savanna is in a country called Colombia, which is in South America. It's a place with lots of farms and open spaces, perfect for growing food.

Who Lived There and What Did They Do?

The Muisca people lived in Bacatá. They were very good at farming and lived in a place that meant 'outside the farm fields.' This name showed how important their farms were! They had a leader called the zipa, who was like a king. The zipa lived in Bacatá and made important decisions for everyone. They had their own special ways of living and celebrating.

A Name That Traveled Far!

The most amazing thing about Bacatá is its name! The big city of Bogotá, the capital of Colombia, got its name from this ancient place. Even though Bogotá is in a different spot, its name is a reminder of the Muisca people and their important settlement. It’s like a secret code connecting the past to the present!

When Did the Spanish Arrive?

A long, long time ago, explorers from Spain came to this land. They met the Muisca people and learned about Bacatá. The Spanish leader, Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada, arrived in 1537. They eventually built a new city nearby, which grew and grew, and its name still honors the old Bacatá. The last zipa, Tisquesusa, sadly passed away when the Spanish arrived.
