Atlantic Puffins and razorbills on Seal Island

Key Facts
Splashy Sea Clowns!
Imagine a bird that looks like it's wearing a colorful party hat and has bright orange feet! That's the Atlantic puffin! These little birds are amazing swimmers and divers.
They have a special beak that changes color when they are ready to have babies. Puffins spend most of their lives in the ocean, only coming to land to build their nests and raise their chicks. They are sometimes called 'sea parrots' because they look so funny and colorful!
Home Sweet Ocean Home!
Atlantic puffins live in the cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean. They breed on islands and rocky coasts in places like Iceland, Greenland, and Canada. When it's time to have their babies, they dig cozy burrows in the ground, like little underground homes.
These burrows keep them safe from windy weather and sneaky predators. They love to live in big groups called colonies, where lots of puffins nest close together.
Fishy Feasts and Flying Fins!
What's for dinner for a puffin? Lots of yummy fish! Puffins are super divers. They can swim underwater using their wings like flippers to zoom after small fish, like sandeels and herring. They can even hold many fish in their beaks at once to take back to their hungry chicks. Itβs like they have a built-in fish basket! They also eat tiny sea creatures called zooplankton and small crabs.
Tiny Puffins, Big Adventures!
Baby puffins, called chicks, grow up super fast! After about six weeks, they are ready to leave their cozy burrow. They waddle out at night and swim away from land. Guess what? They don't come back to land for several years! They spend their time out in the big ocean, learning to fish and survive. It's a big adventure for such a small bird!
