Meet the Big Fishy Friend!

Imagine a fish that can be as long as a grown-up is tall! That's the Atlantic cod. It has a bumpy back and a stripe running down its side, like a secret path. These fish love to swim in the cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean, from places like Canada all the way to Europe. They are super important for the ocean's health and have been around for ages!

Cod's Ocean Home

Atlantic cod live in a big, watery neighborhood called the Atlantic Ocean. They like to hang out near the shore, but they can also swim down deep, as far as a 30-story building is tall! You can find them in chilly places like the North Sea, near Iceland, and even up towards the Arctic. They have different colors, from green to brown, and sometimes have cool spots!

What's for Dinner?

Atlantic cod are hungry hunters! They eat smaller fish and other sea creatures that swim around them. They are carnivores, which means they only eat meat. Their big mouths help them gobble up their meals. They are also a favorite food for humans, which is why people have been fishing for them for hundreds of years.

Cod's Amazing Life

These fish can live for a really long time, up to 25 years! That's older than many kids in elementary school. They grow quite big, sometimes as long as a grown-up and weighing as much as a big dog. Sadly, there aren't as many cod as there used to be because too many were caught. Scientists are working hard to help them come back!
