Welcome to the Swampy Giant!

The Atchafalaya Basin is like a super-duper big, wet park in Louisiana, a state in the United States. It's the biggest swampy place in the whole country! It's where a big river, the Atchafalaya River, flows and meets the salty Gulf of Mexico.

This amazing place is home to lots of trees, like the famous cypress trees that have knobby knees sticking out of the water. It's a very special kind of forest that's wet all the time!

A Growing Land of Water and Trees

This swampy land is always changing, like a giant sandcastle that the water keeps adding to. The Atchafalaya River is building new land, called a delta, where it meets the ocean. Most of the Atchafalaya Basin is covered in forests, about 70% of it!

That's like having 7 out of every 10 trees you see be part of this giant swamp forest. It's also home to marshes, which are grassy wet areas, and open water where you can see the sky.

Home to Amazing Cypress Trees!

The Atchafalaya Basin is famous for its special cypress trees. These trees love to have their feet wet! They grow in a part of the swamp that's like a giant, connected forest, and it's the biggest one of its kind left in the United States.

Imagine a forest so big it covers an area larger than many, many school playgrounds put together! These trees are super important for the animals that live there.

Where the River Meets the Sea

This incredible place is found in south-central Louisiana. The Atchafalaya River starts up north and flows all the way down to the southern part of the state, near a city called Morgan City. It's a place where the land is always getting a little bit bigger because the river is dropping off dirt and sand as it flows into the Gulf of Mexico.

It's a busy meeting spot for fresh river water and salty ocean water.
