Meet the Giant City!

Çatalhöyük was a super-duper old city, way older than your grandparents or even their grandparents! It started a very, very long time ago, around 7500 BC. That's like, 9,500 years ago! It was in a place called Anatolia, which is now part of Turkey. This city was so big, it was like a giant mound, and people kept building on top of the old houses, making it taller and taller.

No Doors? How Did They Get In?

Here's a super cool secret about Çatalhöyük: the houses were built right next to each other, with no streets in between! To get into their homes, people climbed up to the roof, maybe using ladders, and then climbed down inside. It was like having a secret entrance! They also buried their family members right under the floor of their houses. Imagine sleeping above your grandma!

A City Like No Other!

Çatalhöyük was one of the biggest and oldest cities ever found from that time. It was so important that it's now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which means it's a special place that the whole world wants to protect. It tells us so much about how people lived thousands of years ago, how they built their homes, and how they lived together in a big community.

What Was It Like?

People in Çatalhöyük lived in square houses made of mud bricks. They didn't have cars or buses, so they walked everywhere. They grew food like wheat and barley and raised animals like sheep and cows. They also made beautiful art, like paintings on their walls and little statues. It was a busy, bustling place where people lived, worked, and played a very, very long time ago.
