Meet the Land of Asia!

Once upon a time, a big part of what is now Turkey was called the Roman province of Asia. It was like a giant playground for the Romans, filled with hundreds of cities that mostly ran themselves! These cities were super proud and loved to show off by hosting amazing festivals and games. It was a very important and wealthy place for the Roman Empire, like a treasure chest!

How Did It Become Roman?

A long, long time ago, a kingdom called the Attalid Kingdom was in this area. The Romans were very powerful, and in 133 BC, they decided to take over this kingdom. This is how the Roman province of Asia was born! It became one of the most special places in the whole Roman Empire, ruled by important Roman leaders called proconsuls. It stayed this way for a very long time.

Why Was Asia So Special?

This Roman province was like the VIP section of the Roman Empire! It was incredibly rich, meaning it had lots of money and valuable things. For most of its time as a Roman province, it was peaceful, which helped all the cities grow and thrive. The cities were famous for their beautiful buildings, exciting festivals, and even for having great speakers who could tell amazing stories.

Games, Gods, and Glory!

The cities in Roman Asia loved to compete! They would try to outdo each other by building the most impressive temples for their gods, hosting the grandest festival games, and having the most talented performers. They even asked the Roman rulers for special favors to show how important they were. It was a place full of culture, competition, and a lot of fun activities!
