Meet the Man Who Ruled Portugal!

António de Oliveira Salazar was a very important person in Portugal a long time ago. He was like a teacher who became the boss of the whole country! He was born way back in 1889, even before your grandparents were born.

He was a professor, which means he taught at a big school called the University of Coimbra. But then, he stepped out of the classroom and into a big leadership role, becoming the head of Portugal for many, many years.

How Did He Become the Boss?

Portugal was having some problems, like a playground with lots of arguments. The army stepped in to help fix things in 1926. They needed someone smart to sort out the country's money.

That's where Salazar came in! He was really good with numbers and quickly made the country's money work better. Because he did such a good job with the money, he was given more and more power, eventually becoming the leader of Portugal.

What Was His Country Like?

Salazar believed in strong rules and that Portugal should be proud of its history and traditions. He didn't like big changes or new ideas that he thought were bad. His motto was 'God, Fatherland, and Family,' which shows what he thought was most important. He also believed Portugal's faraway lands, called colonies, were a big part of the country and should stay connected.

A Very Long Time in Charge!

Salazar was in charge of Portugal for an incredibly long time, from 1932 to 1968. That's 36 years! Imagine a school principal being in charge for longer than you've been alive. During his time, Portugal stayed out of big wars like World War II, which was a smart move. But he also made sure people didn't say or write things against his rules, using something called censorship.
