Meet the Giant Mountain!

Antisana is a HUGE volcano in a country called Ecuador. It's like a giant sleeping monster made of rock and earth! It's so tall, it's the fourth highest volcano in all of Ecuador. That's like stacking more than 100 school buses on top of each other! It sits about as far away from Ecuador's capital city, Quito, as a long car ride.

A Mountain That's Tricky to Climb!

Climbing Antisana is not like climbing a small hill. It's one of the most challenging climbs in the area. Imagine trying to climb a super steep playground slide that goes up and up for miles! Even famous explorers from long ago, like Alexander von Humboldt, wanted to try and climb it. It takes a lot of bravery and skill to reach the very top!

Where is This Big Mountain?

Antisana is part of a long chain of mountains called the Andes. These mountains are like a giant backbone running through South America. Antisana is a stratovolcano, which means it's built up layer by layer from lava and ash. It's a very special place in Ecuador, a country known for its amazing nature and diverse landscapes.

A Mountain's Story

While Antisana is a natural wonder, people have also explored its peaks. In 1965, some brave climbers made the very first trip to the top of a part of Antisana called South Antisana. They were Edwin Bernbaum from America and two climbers from Ecuador, Rómulo Pazmino and Leonardo Droira. It shows that even though mountains are old, people are still discovering and exploring them!
