Who Were the Antigonids?

The Antigonids were a royal family, like a super-important family, who ruled a big kingdom called Macedon a super long time ago. Their story starts after a famous leader named Alexander the Great. His generals, who were like his best friends and helpers, started fighting over his kingdom.

One of these generals, Antigonus I, was so strong that his family, the Antigonids, eventually took charge of Macedon. They were like the kings and queens of this land for many years!

When Did They Rule?

The Antigonids became rulers around 306 BC. That's over 2,300 years ago! Think about how old your grandparents are, and then imagine someone much, much older.

They ruled for a long time, until 168 BC. That's a lot of birthdays! During their rule, they controlled a large area that included Greece and even parts of the Middle East.

It was a very exciting time with lots of changes happening all over the place.

Who Were the Big Stars?

The most important person was Antigonus I, who started it all. His son, Demetrius I, was also a big deal. Later, Antigonus II Gonatas really made the family's rule strong and steady. There was also Antigonus III Doson, who made Greece stronger by bringing different parts together. The last king was Perseus, who tried his best to keep the kingdom safe from a powerful new enemy called Rome.

What Happened to Them?

The Antigonids were powerful for a long time, but eventually, a new power called Rome became very strong. Rome started to take over more and more land. After many battles, Rome finally defeated the last Antigonid king, Perseus, in 168 BC. This meant the Antigonid family's time as rulers was over, and Macedon became part of the Roman Republic. It was the end of their amazing royal story.
