Meet Antigone!

Antigone is a super old play from ancient Greece, written by a man named Sophocles a super long time ago, around 2,400 years back! It's like a really, really old storybook that people still read and act out today. This play is about a brave girl named Antigone who has to make a very difficult choice.

It's one of the oldest plays we still have from that time, like finding a dinosaur bone that's still in one piece!

A Family Feud and a King's Rule

Long ago, Antigone's brothers, Eteocles and Polynices, fought a big fight over who would be king. Sadly, they both died! The new king, Creon, who was Antigone's uncle, made a rule: Eteocles would get a big, fancy funeral, but Polynices, he said, was a traitor and shouldn't be buried at all. This was a very strict rule, and it made Antigone very sad and angry because Polynices was her brother.

Breaking the Rules for Family

Antigone loved her brother Polynices very much. Even though King Creon said it was against the law to bury him, Antigone decided she had to do it. She believed that family was more important than the king's rules. So, she secretly went and buried her brother, even though she knew she could get in big trouble. It was a very brave, but also very dangerous, thing to do!

Why We Still Talk About Antigone

This play is still important because it makes us think about what's right and wrong. Should you always follow the rules, even if they seem unfair? Or is it more important to listen to your heart and your family?

Antigone's story shows us that sometimes people have to make really hard choices. It's like deciding if you should tell on your friend for breaking a rule or keep quiet because you're friends.
