Who Were These Anglo-Saxons?

Long, long ago, even before your grandparents were born, people called the Anglo-Saxons came to Britain. They weren't just one group, but three: the Angles, the Saxons, and the Jutes. They were brave travelers who sailed in big wooden boats across the chilly North Sea.

When they arrived, they found Britain was already home to people, but they decided to settle down and build their own villages and towns. They were known for being strong warriors and skilled farmers.

Adventures on the Sea!

These amazing people traveled from places that are now called Denmark and Germany. Their boats were called longships, and they were long and narrow, perfect for cutting through the waves. Imagine a boat as long as a school bus!

They would sail for many days, looking for new lands to call home. It was a very brave thing to do, leaving everything behind to start a new life in a faraway place. They brought their own languages and ways of living with them.

Building a New Land

The Anglo-Saxons were super good at building things! They built wooden houses with thatched roofs, like a cozy blanket on top. They also built strong forts to keep themselves safe.

They were excellent farmers, growing crops like barley and wheat to make bread. They also loved to hunt and raise animals. Their villages were often built near rivers, which were like superhighways for traveling and getting water.

They even made beautiful jewelry and weapons!

Stories and Treasures

The Anglo-Saxons told some of the most famous stories ever! One of the most famous is the tale of Beowulf, a brave hero who fought a scary monster. These stories were often sung or told around a warm fire.

They also loved making beautiful things, like shiny gold jewelry and strong metal swords. They buried their important people with their treasures, like a special send-off for their journey to the next world. These treasures help us learn all about them today!
