Drawing the Big Picture!

Imagine you have a giant coloring book of the whole country! Andrew Ellicott was like a super-duper artist who helped draw the borders and roads for many new places. He was especially good at mapping the lands far away, past the big Appalachian Mountains. He made sure everyone knew where things were, like drawing lines on a treasure map!

Building a Brand New City!

Andrew also helped design a very important city called Washington, D.C. It's where the leaders of America work! He finished the plans that another clever person started. Think of it like finishing a giant LEGO castle that someone else began. He made sure the streets were in the right places so the city would look amazing and work well.

Teaching Future Explorers!

Did you know Andrew was also a teacher? He taught people how to be good map makers, too! One of his students was Meriwether Lewis, who went on a famous adventure with his friend William Clark to explore the western parts of America. Andrew taught him the skills he needed to draw maps of all the new things they discovered.

A Life of Lines and Learning!

Andrew Ellicott lived a long time ago, from 1754 to 1820. During his life, America was still growing and changing. His job as a surveyor, which means measuring land, was super important for making sure new towns and states were organized. He helped lay the groundwork for the country we know today!
