An interior view of ancient Greek sculpture in the Crystal Palace, Sydenham. After housing the Great Exhibition in 1851 the Crystal Palace had been dismantled and rebuilt on a site at Sydenham, south east London, reopening in June 1854. The 'Palace of the People' as it became known, was at first a huge success as the world's first 'theme park'.

Key Facts
Meet the Super Sculptors!
Long, long ago, in ancient Greece, people loved making statues. They thought the human body was the most beautiful thing ever, so they sculpted gods, goddesses, and even sports stars! These statues were often made of shiny bronze or strong stone. They were so important that they are still famous today, even though they are super old!
When Were They Made?
Ancient Greek statues were made over a very long time. The earliest ones, called Archaic, were made from about 650 to 480 BC. Then came the Classical period, from 480 to 323 BC, when the statues got even more lifelike. After that was the Hellenistic period. Think of it like different chapters in a really cool book about art!
What Were They Like?
These statues were often of people, and the Greeks made them look super real. They even made little statues out of clay, like toys! The biggest and best ones were made of bronze, but sadly, many of those were melted down to make other things because bronze was so valuable. Stone statues lasted longer, which is why we see more of them now.
Why We Still Love Them!
Ancient Greek sculptures are like a time machine, showing us what people thought was beautiful and important thousands of years ago. They teach us about their gods and heroes. Even today, artists look at these old statues to learn how to make their own art look amazing. They are like the superheroes of the art world!
