Anacostia River

Key Facts
Where Does the River Live?
Imagine a wiggly blue line on a map! That's the Anacostia River. It starts its journey in a place called Prince George's County in Maryland. Then, it flows all the way into Washington, D.C., the capital city of the United States. It's about as long as 14 football fields put end-to-end. Finally, it joins up with another river, the Potomac River, and heads out to sea.
A River's Ancient Name!
Long, long ago, before there were big cities, Native American people lived by this river. They called the area 'Nacotchtank.' The river was named after them, showing how important they were to this special place. It's like the river remembers its first friends!
From Forgotten to Fantastic!
For a while, the Anacostia River wasn't very clean, and people didn't pay much attention to it. It was like a forgotten toy on a shelf. But guess what? Lots of people, from scientists to regular folks, are working hard to clean it up! They want to make it a happy, healthy home for fish and animals again.
Why We Love Our River!
Cleaning up the Anacostia River is super important! It helps the plants and animals that live there. It also makes the area around the river a nicer place for people to visit and enjoy. When rivers are healthy, the whole world is healthier too. Itβs a team effort to keep our planet clean!
