Key Facts
Where is This Icy Place?
Imagine a giant, frozen playground at the very bottom of our planet. That's kind of like the Amundsen Sea! It's a big arm of the Southern Ocean, which is the water all around Antarctica. It's near a place called Marie Byrd Land in western Antarctica. Think of it as a super cold, watery hug for a part of the land.
A Sea Made of Ice!
Most of the time, the Amundsen Sea is covered in ice, like a giant ice blanket! Sometimes, a huge piece of ice called the Thwaites Ice Tongue sticks out into the sea. The ice that melts and flows into this sea comes from a giant ice sheet that's as big as the state of Texas! This ice sheet is super thick, about 3 kilometers deep, which is taller than many skyscrapers stacked up!
Named After a Brave Explorer!
This chilly sea got its name from a very famous explorer named Roald Amundsen. He was a Norwegian explorer who loved adventures in icy places. In 1929, another explorer, Captain Nils Larsen, was sailing in this area and decided to name the sea after Roald Amundsen to honor his bravery. So, every time you hear Amundsen Sea, you can think of a brave explorer!
What's It Like There?
The Amundsen Sea is a very cold and windy place, as you can imagine! It's mostly covered in ice, and the water underneath is freezing. It's not a place where people usually live because it's so cold and icy. But it's a very important part of Antarctica's giant ice system, helping to move ice from the land into the ocean.
