Who Were the Ammonites?

Long, long ago, there was a land called Ammon. It was a kingdom nestled between two winding rivers. The people who lived there were called Ammonites.

Their main city was called Rabbah, which is now the capital of a country called Jordan! Think of it like a big, important town that everyone knew. The Ammonites had their own special gods they believed in, like Milcom.

They were a people with their own land and their own way of life, just like you have your own home and family.

Where Did Ammon Sit?

Ammon was a kingdom that sat on the east side of a big river called the Jordan River. It was a special spot, tucked between two valleys that looked like giant, dry rivers, one called Arnon and the other Jabbok. Their main city, Rabbah, was so important that today, the capital of Jordan, a city called Amman, is built right on top of it!

Imagine building a new playground right where your favorite old fort used to be. That's kind of what happened with Rabbah and Amman.

What Did They Believe?

The Ammonites had their own special beliefs and gods. The most famous god mentioned in old stories is Milcom. Sometimes, people also talked about a god or a special way of making offerings called Molech.

These were very important to the Ammonites and were a big part of their lives and how they saw the world. It’s like how some people have special holidays or traditions that are very important to their families.

Ammonites in Old Stories

You might hear about the Ammonites in very old books, like the Bible. These stories tell us that the Ammonites were a people who lived in their own kingdom. They had their own king and their own land.

They were neighbors to other groups of people living in the area. Sometimes they were friends, and sometimes they had disagreements, just like kids on a playground might. But they were a real people with a real kingdom!
