Where Did Alonso Sail?

Alonso de Ojeda was a brave Spanish explorer who lived a long, long time ago. He sailed across the big, blue ocean to explore places that were new to Europeans. He was one of the first people from Europe to see places like Colombia and Venezuela. He even sailed to islands like Curaçao and Aruba. Think of it like exploring your backyard, but much, much bigger and with a boat!

Discovering Venezuela!

One of the most exciting things Alonso de Ojeda did was name a country called Venezuela! When he saw the houses built on stilts in the water, it reminded him of Venice, a city in Italy. So, he called it Venezuela, which means 'Little Venice'. He also explored other amazing places like Guyana, where he was the first European to visit. He even sailed to islands like Trinidad and Tobago!

Sailing with Friends!

Sometimes, Alonso de Ojeda didn't sail alone. He had friends who went on these big adventures with him! One of his friends was named Amerigo Vespucci.

Amerigo was also an explorer, and he was so important that a whole continent was named after him: America! Another friend was Juan de la Cosa, who was a mapmaker and drew the first map of this new world. Imagine having friends who help you discover and draw maps of new places!

What Did He Find?

Alonso de Ojeda was a busy explorer! He didn't just sail around; he also helped start new settlements. He founded a place called Santa Cruz.

He was also a governor, which means he was in charge of a place and helped make decisions. He was a conquistador, which means he was a soldier who explored and sometimes fought in new lands. His adventures helped Europeans learn about many new places and cultures.
