Who Was King Alexander?

Alexander I was a king who lived a long time ago, from 1888 to 1934. He was known as 'Alexander the Unifier' because he worked hard to bring different parts of his country together. He was the King of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes, and later the King of Yugoslavia.

He was a brave commander who led armies in wars before he even became king. He spent some of his childhood living in different countries because his family had to leave their home for a while.

A Country Made of Many Pieces!

Alexander's biggest job was to make one big country out of many smaller groups of people who spoke different languages and had different traditions. Think of it like trying to build one giant LEGO castle from many different colored brick boxes! He helped create the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes.

This was a huge deal because it meant people who were once separate were now part of the same kingdom. He wanted everyone to feel like they belonged together.

When Things Got Tricky...

Being a king wasn't always easy for Alexander. Sometimes, people in different parts of the country disagreed a lot. There were arguments and even some sad events.

Because of these problems, Alexander decided to take control of the country himself for a while, like a captain making all the decisions on a ship. He changed the country's name to Yugoslavia, which means 'Land of the South Slavs'. He wanted to make sure the country stayed strong and united.

A Brave King's Last Trip

King Alexander traveled to France in 1934 to meet with other leaders and make friends for his country. But sadly, during his visit, something very tragic happened. He was attacked and lost his life. This was a very sad day for Yugoslavia. He was only 48 years old. His young son, Peter II, became the next king, but he was too young to rule, so someone else helped him.
