Key Facts
Meet the Caliph Who Trusted in God!
Al-Mutawakkil was a very important leader, called a caliph, a long, long time ago in a place called the Abbasid Caliphate. His name, Al-Mutawakkil, means 'He who relies on God.' He was like the king of a huge kingdom that stretched super far! He ruled from the year 847 until 861.
That's a long time to be in charge! He was the tenth caliph, which means there were nine before him who also led the people.
A Ruler's Big Decisions!
Al-Mutawakkil made some really big changes. He decided to stop a time when some wise people were treated unfairly. He also let a famous scholar named Ahmad ibn Hanbal go free. This was a big deal because it meant people could think and believe different things without being punished. He was known for being very religious and strong in his beliefs.
How Big Was His Empire?
Under Al-Mutawakkil, the empire grew bigger than ever before! Imagine your playground getting bigger and bigger until it was as big as your whole town, and then even bigger! His kingdom was like that. He was a strong ruler, but sometimes he was tough, especially with people who had different religions than him. He wanted things to be a certain way in his lands.
A Sad Ending for a Powerful Leader
Sadly, Al-Mutawakkil's rule came to a sudden end. Some of his own guards, who were supposed to protect him, hurt him. This happened because some people, even his own son, were not happy with how he was ruling. His death was like a big storm that caused a lot of trouble and fighting in the kingdom for many years after he was gone.
