Key Facts
Meet the Lion Family!
Once upon a time, a family named Assad ruled the country of Syria. Their name, Assad, means 'lion' in Arabic! This family started with a man named Hafez al-Assad, who became the leader of Syria a long, long time ago, in 1971.
He was like the king of the country. Later, his son, Bashar al-Assad, took over and became the leader after his father passed away. They were in charge for many, many years until very recently.
Where Did the Lions Come From?
The Assad family didn't always have that name. Long ago, their family name was 'al-Wahsh,' which means 'the savage.' But a man named Ali Sulayman decided to change it to 'al-Assad' because he was a respected helper in his village and wanted a stronger name. He and his wife had children, and their family grew and grew, eventually leading to Hafez and Bashar.
They came from a special area in Syria called Qardaha.
What Made Them So Special?
The Assad family was very powerful. They were like the main characters in Syria's story for over 50 years! Pictures of Hafez al-Assad were everywhere, like posters of superheroes in a classroom. People called him the 'Immortal Leader.' His son, Bashar, was called the 'Young Leader.' They wanted everyone to know how important they were, and they were in charge of many things in the country.
The Lion's Roar Fades
For a very long time, the Assad family was the most important family in Syria. But not everyone was happy with their rule. People started to disagree, and this led to a big conflict called the Syrian Civil War. In the end, after ruling for so many years, Bashar al-Assad and his family had to leave Syria. Their time as leaders finally came to an end in December 2024.
