Meet the Speedy Stingers!

Imagine a bee that’s a little bit like a regular honeybee, but much, much faster to get angry! Africanized bees, also called 'killer bees' (but they're not really killers!), are known for being super protective of their homes. They live in warm places all over the world, from Africa to South America and even parts of the United States.

They build their homes in all sorts of spots, like hollow trees, old buildings, or even underground! They are busy bees, always working together.

Where Did These Busy Bees Come From?

These amazing bees didn't always live everywhere! They were first made in Brazil by scientists who wanted to see if they could make better honeybees. They mixed bees from Africa with bees from Europe.

But oops! The African bees were much more protective and loved to fly away and start new homes. Soon, they spread all over South America and then zoomed north into North America.

They are like tiny travelers who love to explore new places!

What's for Dinner for a Bee?

Just like you need yummy food to grow big and strong, Africanized bees need food too! They are like tiny gardeners, visiting colorful flowers all day long. They sip sweet nectar, which is like sugary juice, and collect yellow dust called pollen.

Nectar is used to make honey, their favorite treat! Pollen is like their protein shake, giving them energy. They are very picky eaters, preferring flowers that are blooming nearby.

Why Are They So Famous (and Feared)?

Africanized bees are famous because they are super quick to defend their hive. If they feel like their home is in danger, they will swarm out in a big group to chase away anything that bothers them. They can chase for a longer distance than regular bees.

This is why people call them 'killer bees,' but really, they are just very, very good at protecting their families and their honey. They are an important part of nature, helping flowers grow!
