Key Facts
Meet the Gentle Giant!
Imagine a big, gray, and very slow animal that loves to eat plants. That's the African manatee! It's like a giant, friendly potato that lives in the water.
These amazing creatures are also called West African manatees because they live along the coast of West Africa. They are one of the only sea cows in the world that live in the 'Old World', which means places like Africa and Asia, not the Americas. They are super peaceful and spend most of their day munching on yummy underwater plants.
Where Do They Splash Around?
African manatees love warm, shallow waters. You can find them swimming in rivers, lagoons, and along the coast from Senegal all the way down to Angola. That's a huge stretch of coastline!
They like places where they can easily reach the plants they love to eat, which grow near the water's edge or float on the surface. Think of it like their own special underwater garden where they can graze all day long.
What's on the Menu?
These sea cows are herbivores, which means they only eat plants! Their favorite snacks are seagrasses, water hyacinths, and other leafy greens that grow in the water. They use their big, paddle-like tails to swim slowly and their flippers to help them grab food.
They eat a LOT, sometimes as much as a whole bathtub full of plants every single day! It's like they are always at an all-you-can-eat plant buffet.
Super Slow and Super Special
African manatees are quite large, growing up to 10 feet long, which is about as long as a small car! They can weigh as much as 1,100 pounds, which is heavier than a pony. They have no teeth in the front of their mouths, but they have special teeth in the back that help them grind up tough plants.
Sadly, these gentle giants are in danger, and scientists are working hard to protect them and their homes.
