Why Were They Fighting?

Imagine a time when some people were not free and were forced to work for others. This was called slavery. Many African Americans wanted to be free, and the Civil War was a chance for them to fight for that freedom. They also wanted to help make the United States a place where everyone was treated fairly. It was a big fight for a very important idea: freedom for all people.

Joining the Army!

At first, the army didn't let Black men join. But as the war went on, they realized how much help they needed. So, brave African Americans started joining the Union Army! They wore blue uniforms, just like other soldiers. Some of these soldiers were formerly enslaved people who had escaped to freedom. They fought with amazing courage, even when things were tough.

Fighting for Freedom

African American soldiers fought in many important battles. They showed everyone that they were strong and determined. One famous group was the 54th Massachusetts Infantry. They were so brave that their story is told in a movie called 'Glory'! These soldiers proved that Black people were just as capable and courageous as anyone else.

Making a Difference

The fight of African Americans in the Civil War was super important. It helped the Union win the war and end slavery. It also showed that Black people deserved to be treated as equal citizens. Their bravery helped change the country forever, making it a step closer to being a land of freedom for everyone.
